Rwenzori Mountain Hiking can be combined with gorilla trekking mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. There are several adventurous interests at the Rwenzori mountains; one has to transfer to Nyakalengeja which is the actual starting point of climbing the Rwenzori Mountains. Resting periods will be there during the hiking adventure. The scenic views during your way to Margareta summit will be really amazing. When hikers reach higher altitude, they will experience cool weather and they will be walking by the ice that is frozen.

Mountain Gorilla Habitat in Africa

African Mountain Gorilla Habitat
In the world today, gorilla trekking safaris are becoming popular and ranked among the top world adventures. The habitat of Gorilla gorilla beringei consists of subtropical/tropical Moist Forest (IUCN, 2002). Forest edges and regenerating or secondary forest are favoured gorilla habitat (IUCN, 1982). A number of vegetation zones have been identified in the mountain gorilla habitat of the central Virungas Volcano region, which mostly consist of Hagenia-Hypericum woodland with a relatively open canopy and extremely dense herbaceous understorey (Watts, 1997). Mountain gorillas range up to 3400 m in altitude with occasional forays even higher (IUCN, 1982). Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park tend to live in lower elevations, warmer temperatures and are more arboreal than Virunga gorillas (Sarmiento et al., 1996). The area of habitat occupied by the mountain gorilla in the Virungas is approximately 375 km2 and the Bwindi gorillas occupy an area of approximately 215 km2 (Butynski, 2001). This is where gorilla safaris Uganda take place as gorillas are visited by different people from different parts of the world.

Success of Rwanda Gorilla Tourism

Factors to the success of gorilla tourism in Rwanda

Many factors responsible for the success of gorilla trekking tourism in Rwanda, a country of thousand Hills. A prerequisite is the relative ease of habituating gorillas, facilitated by the temperate climate and benign habitat. Mountain gorillas can also be visited in Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable national park) and Dr Congo (Virunga park). Very few people allowed to visit each gorilla group, not more than 8 pax per day per group. A gorilla permit costs US$500.00.

Also the good accessibility of the gorillas is a merit. Being a small country, it is very easy to reach gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National park, just 2 hours drive from Kigali, compared to Uganda’s Bwindi forest, 6 hours from Kampala. In addition, developed infrastructure, especially roads, is relatively good. Rwanda government has tried to promote its tourism sector by developing a clear tourism strategy; marketing the destination Rwanda successfully especially gorilla trekking safaris; serious of the private sector in the policy dialogue; and generally improved the country’s business environment. The above key factors have contributed much to the development of Rwanda tourism.

RwandaAir & Tourism expansion

Ruanda is counting on an aggressive expansion of its national carrier RwandAir to grow its gorilla tourism revenues in 2012, as the airline launches new routes and direct flights in the coming months. Rwanda national airline last week took delivery of its second Boeing 737-800, bringing its fleet to seven aircraft, including two CRJ200 and a Dash 8-100

The PTA Bank financed the acquisition of the two aircraft at a cost of $60 million, a deal that was arranged by HSBC and guaranteed by the United States Export Import Bank. The fleet expansion will take care of the airline’s growth allowing it to operate the recently announced additional frequencies to Dubai. These flights will be the first direct service from Kigali to Dubai.

According to Rwanda Development Board (RDB,  the expansion of RwandaAir and the recent launch of several direct flights to Kigali (the capital) from European capitals by global airlines gives a much needed boost to tourism in the country, mainly gorilla trekking tours. Of recent, Rwandaair signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkish Airlines to see the two carriers collaborate closely on schedule synchronisation, code sharing, technical support and training.

“With this increase of airlines and RwandAir’s new destinations, we are realising our strategy of becoming a regional hub,” Rica Rwigamba, RDB’s head of tourism and conservation told The EastAfrican.

Tour and travel operators in Rwanda and neighboring country of Uganda expect that RwandAir’s expansion will boost the gorilla tourism and hospitality industry as it will increase attractiveness of Rwanda as a tourism destination with more direct flight connections.

Gorilla Conservation, Safaris in Congo -Uganda, Rwanda, Africa

Kahuzi Biega National Park gorillas lived without any major disturbances since their habituation started in 1970. The wars from October 1996 to May 1997 and from August 1998 to June 2003 in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo led to a large-scale slaughter of gorillas which affected gorilla tours in the park. The results of this study based on interviews with ex-poachers suggest that when habituated and non-habituated gorillas are exposed to similar poaching-pressures, the habituated gorillas are more likely to be killed than the non-habituated. The estimated ratio of killed habituated gorillas in Congo was as high as 71% vs. 42% for non-habituated gorillas. Habituated gorillas in Kahuzi Biega Park in Congo were 1.6 times more susceptible to poaching than their non-habituated counterparts. It is recommended that habituation should not be expanded, although already habituated families should be maintained as such for sustainable gorilla safaris / tourism development.
